Nature Can’t Wait. Those we elect must act.
Let your candidates know they must urgently commit to protecting and restoring Welsh nature.
The Senedd election on 7 May is a crucial one for nature. Wales is committed to the international targets to halt wildlife loss and protect 30% of land and sea by 2030. That means that the people we choose to elect now, will ultimately decide if this happens or not.
Hitting these targets would be a game-changer, because when nature thrives, we all thrive. It would protect and expand the wonderful wild places in our towns and cities, our countryside and seas. It would increase the wildlife on our doorsteps and in the special places across Wales, which should all be havens for nature. We will also benefit because nature is our life support system: it gives us clean air and water, healthy soils to produce our food and helps us to become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
This election, we all have a vital role: Tell candidates that nature can’t wait.

Wherever you live in Wales, your voice can make a difference
The power to make most of the laws and policies affecting our environment is devolved, so the next Welsh Government elected on 7 May could have a big impact for Welsh nature. By emailing your local candidates you can let them know they must urgently commit to being a voice for nature where you live and all across Wales.
This is an opportunity
It would be a disaster for all of us if we miss the legally binding targets for nature we’ve promised to hit, so we must make this happen now. The good news is that science shows we can turn the loss of nature around. Already, amazing people across Wales are showing that we can restore our natural world in ways that not only help tackle the nature and climate emergency, but which also works for us, and our businesses. We now need the political support to scale this action up, fast.
We need our natural world to recover as much as our wildlife does
We rely on the natural world every day. It gives us the clean air we breathe, the water we drink, and the healthy soils to help grow nutritious food. Wildlife habitats can help us adapt to the impacts of climate change by locking up atmospheric carbon and reducing flood risk. We know that having access to explore wild places means healthier people and communities. Growing evidence shows if we all had access to a good quality green space, it could save the NHS billions of pounds a year in treatment costs.
If enough of us speak up, we can turn promises into action.
That’s why we’re calling for all candidates and parties to make a commitment to:
- Set ambitious targets to restore nature
- Ensure the best wildlife sites on land and at sea, are well cared for
- Make sure planning and development help nature
- Support nature friendly farming to restore and look after nature
Together, we can make it clear that restoring our wildlife and wild spaces needs to be a top priority for the next Welsh Government.
