"Without farming in a nature friendly way, the soil won’t function for much longer. It just so happens that the things that are good for nature have a positive impact on soil health, risk of flooding, our crops, and of course everyone's mental health. Hedgerows and beetle banks contain the predators of the pests that eat our crops, storing carbon, reducing soil erosion and holding water in the soil and providing nature corridors.

We graze our water meadows in a mob- grazing way, we've seen an increase in biodiversity and do not run short of grass anymore. We recently started no till farming, started a Farm Cluster and are growing heritage cereals with a clover understory and are cover crop champions, running trials on different sowing methods.

Much more support is needed for farmers to adopt nature friendly farming methods to protect the land, nature and maintain productivity."

At Botton Head we are proud to maintain a large range of diverse habitats from Blanket Bog Moorland, Ancient and Conifer Woodlands, Hedges, Ponds, Rivers and Streams, Traditional Hay Meadows and Barns and Species Rich Grassland, as well as the in-by rough grazing which we manage for wading birds such as Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Snipe and Curlew, we were proud winners of the Upland Curlew Award for Lancashire and Runners-Up for the North of England, this was following a nomination from our local RSPB officer!"

Dear Chancellor Rachel Reeves,

To grow food, we need nature. The UK Government must increase annual investment now to £5.9bn in nature-friendly farming.

Nature gives us the very things on which all food production depends and helps us tackle climate change. To make sure we can grow the food we need in the future, we must value the part nature plays and put it at the heart of the way we farm. If we do, with 70% of the UK farmed, it could also see the beginnings of a revival for so much of our wildlife with which we share these lands.

The UK Government can’t kick this down the road – you must ring-fence funding now for nature-friendly farming across all four UK countries. New independent research says increasing investment to £5.9bn a year across the UK is essential to meet legally binding nature and climate targets, and to improve the resilience of the UK food and farming industry.

The UK Government must make investing in nature-friendly farming a priority

We don’t just want nature-friendly farming. We need it.

What is nature-friendly farming?

Nature-friendly farming helps keeps our soils and crops healthy and water clean, making farming as a business more resilient and profitable. It boosts wildlife, can reduce the need for pesticides and increases pollinators such as bees on which much of our food relies. And it can reduce carbon emissions and help deal with the impacts of extreme weather caused by climate change, such as flooding and drought.

Many incredible farmers and crofters are already showing you can farm productively and profitably and make space for nature. We’re working with some of them across varied and diverse landscapes such as Hope Farm in Cambridgeshire, the crofts of the Western Isles of Scotland, the Antrim Hills of Northern Ireland and Lake Vyrnwy in the uplands of Wales.
