Name Colin Chappell
Sub-title

Chappel Farms, Lincolnshire

Farm type Arable
Quote (including speech marks) The Chappell family has been farming on the banks of the River Ancholme for four generations. Driven by the need to be more resilient, particularly more frequent flooding, Colin has made major changes on the farm, to work  with, rather than against nature and natural processes. The amount of chemical inputs have been significantly reduced and less disturbance of the soil has boosted its resilience to flood and drought. Nature has also returned. “Lapwings are back in huge numbers, we have deer, there are pike in the river and there’s an otter too.”

"We are tenant Upland/Hill Farmers producing store sheep and cattle in the Forest of Bowland as well as producing some ‘Moorland Mutton’ which is sold in boxes from the farm!

We have been shepherds farming the Bowland Fells of over 10 generations, well over 300 years of knowledge and experience farming with nature all that while!

Farming in a ‘nature friendly’ way is something that needs to be properly invested in, with so much uncertainty within agricultural in the uplands, this investment is crucial for farmers to be able to favour ‘nature friendly’ practices going forward within the food production systems in the uplands!

At Botton Head we are proud to maintain a large range of diverse habitats from Blanket Bog Moorland, Ancient and Conifer Woodlands, Hedges, Ponds, Rivers and Streams, Traditional Hay Meadows and Barns and Species Rich Grassland, as well as the in-by rough grazing which we manage for wading birds such as Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Snipe and Curlew, we were proud winners of the Upland Curlew Award for Lancashire and Runners-Up for the North of England, this was following a nomination from our local RSPB officer!"

Sub-title The Milking Parlour, Cockshotts Farm, Lancashire
Farm type Mixed livestock – sheep, beef & dairy
Quote (including speech marks) "We are a third-generation family run farm who pride ourselves on farming in a nature friendly way. We work with local organisations such as RSPB and the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, to protect and enhance our landscape, whilst also being able to sustain the business. We sell raw milk direct to the public and enjoy educating people who haven't previously considered where their food comes from, or what impact farming can have on nature. We work hard to give back to nature and the landscape through, for example, creating woodland and hedgerow wildlife corridors, maintaining dry-stone walls, creating wetland areas and undertaking rush management for Waders."

It has proved to us that agroecology can deliver environmental gains, business resilience, food security and adequate amounts of affordable food without the mess and misery that we see in the wake of the industrial model of farming."

You can get all the benefits of putting in extra hedges and trees while producing food and feeding the nation. You can produce good-quality food on your farm and still look after it at the same time. Farmers need to do a bit more with the assets they’ve got and look after their farms in such a way that whenever you’re finished it’s better for the next generation than when you got your hands on it."

Quote (including speech marks) "Progressively began to comprehend that our ‘conventional’ farming was not sustainable, organic conversion 2007 and various Stewardship schemes resulting in some fabulous meadows and herbal leys abounding with all manner of wildlife. With a wedding venue on the farm, the comments of amazement as guests wander around the trails is very rewarding. The challenge is to achieve a balance between production and wildlife whilst feeding the nation at an affordable price. The more support provided will be rewarded through a healthy nation with greater sequestration, less pollution and profitable farms."

Quote (including speech marks) "Farming in a nature-friendly way is the only way I ever want to farm. By working more with natural processes rather than always working against them, we’re moving away from that downhill spiral approach to farming - leading to increasing pesticide use, natural system breakdown, and becoming increasingly reliant on external inputs. A farm with nature thriving just feels better. If you know you are looking after what you can, helping wildlife to thrive, it just helps to brighten up the harder days we all face."

Quote (including speech marks) “We believe nature friendly farming is the way farming should be done. Not only are you benefitting nature, but you are also benefitting yourself, with less inputs, better soil. With more support and funding we would be able to do more, and it would encourage other farmers. Our work on the farm is paying off for nature with an abundance of birds including yellowhammers, tree sparrows and barn owls”.

To: Chancellor Rachel Reeves

I want the UK to invest now in nature-friendly farming

Read the full petition

Dear Chancellor Rachel Reeves,

To grow food, we need nature. The UK Government must increase annual investment now to £5.9bn in nature-friendly farming.

Nature gives us the very things on which all food production depends and helps us tackle climate change. To make sure we can grow the food we need in the future, we must value the part nature plays and put it at the heart of the way we farm. If we do, with 70% of the UK farmed, it could also see the beginnings of a revival for so much of our wildlife with which we share these lands.

The UK Government can’t kick this down the road – you must ring-fence funding now for nature-friendly farming across all four UK countries. New independent research says increasing investment to £5.9bn a year across the UK is essential to meet legally binding nature and climate targets, and to improve the resilience of the UK food and farming industry.

The UK Government must make investing in nature-friendly farming a priority

We don’t just want nature-friendly farming. We need it.

Please act now!

What is nature-friendly farming?

Nature-friendly farming helps keeps our soils and crops healthy and water clean, making farming as a business more resilient and profitable. It boosts wildlife, can reduce the need for pesticides and increases pollinators such as bees on which much of our food relies. And it can reduce carbon emissions and help deal with the impacts of extreme weather caused by climate change, such as flooding and drought.

Many incredible farmers and crofters are already showing you can farm productively and profitably and make space for nature. We’re working with some of them across varied and diverse landscapes such as Hope Farm in Cambridgeshire, the crofts of the Western Isles of Scotland, the Antrim Hills of Northern Ireland and Lake Vyrnwy in the uplands of Wales.
