Why does
#NatureMatter?

From hearing the piping display of an oystercatcher to seeing the thrilling hillside swoop of a golden eagle, Scotland’s nature brings us so much joy, but we know it is in trouble.

We face a global nature and climate crisis. Scotland is known for its beautiful landscapes and wildlife, but Scotland's nature is declining, fast.

1 in 9 species in Scotland risk national extinction, and Scotland is 28th from the bottom (out of 240 countries) on the Biodiversity Intactness Index, making it one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

Yet, nature is critical to our lives. We are part of nature, and we cannot survive without it.

Remind decision makers why Nature Matters

In the year ahead the Scottish Government will finalise a roadmap for tackling the nature crisis up to 2045, which will include a Natural Environment Bill with legally-binding nature recovery targets. This must halt the decline and start the renewal of our precious wildlife species and habitats.

MSPs from all parties will have a say on this bill, but politicians’ attention is pulled in all sorts of directions. We need to remind them that nature matters, and we need them to take urgent action on nature protection and recovery policy to allow for a nature positive future in Scotland. We need them to know that we expect them to deliver positive changes to enable nature's renewal.

Tell us why nature matters to you.

Nature is vital to all of our lives. It underpins everything from our economies to our mental health. It brings so much joy.

Now is your chance to share that joy

Please share your stories by answering the three simple questions on the next page.

We will be collating these stories to share with decision makers, highlighting people care about, and want action on, nature protection and renewal.
